2010-2011 Science Classes (3)

(held at Robin’s house 611 Iaukea St Honolulu,96813; 533-4515)
To register: Send a $30 check to me (made out to CEI).

1. Chemistry Course (what students need to know to be prepared for a college level chemistry class.)

Level: high school- I’ll teach the math but only grade the chemistry concepts, so a rudimentary knowledge of algebra needed.
Time:3 hours per week, on a Wed, 12-3pm Duration: 14-wk fall & spring semesters; Sept-Dec (see dates below) & Jan-May (TBA)
Cost: $300 per semester and a one-time $30 materials fee (payable upon registration)
Text: Wile, J. (2003). Exploring Creation with Chemistry: 2nd ed. Apologia: IN.
Grades: Report cards issued by Robin, based on participation, homework, & quizzes.
Homework: read, do On Your Own questions, study for quizzes, keep 3-ring binder/timesheets (about 3 hrs/wk for homework)
Fall dates: All Wednesdays Sept-Oct, Nov 3,10,17, Dec 1 & 8

2. Biology Course (When registering, please notate classes: lab, text, or both.)

Biology Lab-only Course (To compliment a text or use as an elective semester as named below)

Sem 1: Zoology (A study of the Animalia Kingdom) We will look at live and preserved organisms both under the microscope and with the naked eye, learn names and organizational classifications, study structure-function correlation, and understand their relationship to the biosphere.

Sem 2: Anatomy and Physiology We will dissect mink and/or cats, studying the skeletal and muscular systems, comparing them to human anatomy and function. We will delve into the other systems (such as digestive, cardio-pulmonary, reproductive, endocrine, and urinary) as time permits
Level: high school; this hands-on lab can be added onto a regular biology or other related science course, since it is not a full course.
Time: 2 hours per week, Fri, 12:30-2:30pm Duration: 14-wk each for fall & spring semesters;
14 classes: all the Fridays in Sept & Oct, Nov 5,12,19 & Dec 3 & 10. Jan-May (TBA)
Cost: $200 per semester and a $30 materials fee (payable upon registration)
Materials: No text required, a 3-ring binder for handouts and lab sheets
Homework: Not much, except studying for a few quizzes; Report cards with topics, activities and grades will be issued.

Biology Academic Text Course
Fall dates: All Wednesdays in Sept-Oct, Nov 3,10,17 Dec 1 & 8 (14 wks for spring semester TBA in Dec)
Time: 2 hours per week, Wed 9:40-11:40am
Textbook required: 2nd edition Apologia biology text only, nothing else except a 3-ring binder
Cost: $200 more per semester
Grades: Report cards issued by Robin, based on participation, homework, & quizzes.
Homework: read, do On Your Own questions, study for quizzes, keep 3-ring binder, and fill out timesheets

3. General Science Course (for at least 6 students in 6-8th grade)
Level: middle school.
Time: 2 hours per week, on Fridays, 10-12noon
Duration: 14-wk fall sem- all Fridays in Sept & Oct, Nov 5,12,19 & Dec 3 & 10; 14-wk spring sem- Jan-May (TBA)
Cost: $200 per semester and a one-time $30 materials fee (payable upon registration)
Text: Exploring Creation w/ General Science 2nd Ed, no need solutions manual
Grades: Report cards issued by Robin, based on participation in activities, completion of homework, & quizzes.
Homework: read, do On Your Own questions, study for quizzes, keep 3-ring binder/timesheet.

August SAT Reservation Form

The dates for AUGUST 2010 Stanford Achievement Testing at CEI have been announced and the Reservation Form has been emailed as a PDF.

  • Grades K-1: Contact Robin Spencer at 808.533.4515 to make arrangements.
  • Grade 2: Monday August 30 & Tuesday August 31 from 8:00 AM until NOON at Windward Worship Center.
  • Grades 3-8: Monday August 23 & Tuesday August 24 from 8:00 AM until NOON at Windward Worship Center.
  • Grades 9-12: Monday August 30 & Tuesday August 32 from 9:00 AM until NOON at Windward Worship Center.

(All testers should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to test time.)
